Display

Being an OLED the quality of this display is excellent. The default settings aren't great though, so I would advise watching this video about LG C1 best picture settings, or alternatively this one about LG C1 picture settings explained, to guide you on how best to set up the display on this TV. It's also worth watching this list of generally useful LG C1 settings to adjust. In summary, it's best to disable as much picture processing and auto power adjustment as possible. However in contast to the above suggestions, I find TruMotion really does help to smooth panning scenes in 24 fps content. I leave it set at the less invasive "cinematic movement" which removes most judder. You can see here an example of LG C1 smoothing from low FPS content to the 120 FPS native supported by this TV.

One area the picture does fall down is with Black levels with SDTV, which are somewhat compressed. Note the 55" may be a bit better in this regard, as it will have a lower pixel density than my 48", and so let more light through, thus being brighter. Also 55" is a sweet spot for perceived picture quality for most standard room sizes, and I would get a 55" if choosing again.

It's worth noting also that this TV has a very thick at base (5cm), which you can see by hovering over the picture above. So if wall mounting it would be about 8cm from the wall, which is a pity given the slimness of the oled display itself. Note the higher end G1 is more designed for wall mounting as it's 2.1cm deep.

Sound

The sound isn't great really, especially with the default sound settings, where the speakers sound very low and tinny. Setting the sound to cinema mode, and disabling dolby atmos helps a lot. However this TV really needs a soundbar, which is bit surprising given how thick and substantial the TV is behind the thin OLED screen. Also note the TV does not support DTS format, which is common on bluerays and downloaded movies, so this will need to be avoided, or converted to other formats somehow before reaching the TV.

Remote

The remote is great, and includes a virtual screen pointer following movement of the remote pointed at the screen. There is also press to talk to google assistant, though note this is not supported if the location of the TV is set to Ireland, which is a required setting if you want to use the RTE player app.

One thing I miss compared to samsung remotes is a dedicated "info" button. You can drill down to this info though by hitting the main OK button, which will display basic info like program name, or input in use etc. Then you just click on that to get more info like program details and/or display resolution etc.

The LG ThinQ app is worth downloading to give essentially another remote. It's a bit better than the provided remote TBH. The app also allows you to show photos from your phone on the TV. Note the app does have a dedicated "info" button on its virtual remote.

Other features

"Terrestrial" TV channels

To view the main UK and Ireland TV channels I connected a chromecast with google TV device, and ran the ibox app on that to stream TV channels. Note the main TV remote works fine with the chromecast, so only a single remote is required.

I also installed the RTE player app to get access to various series etc., but note you need to set the TV location to Ireland for that, and that precludes the use of speaking to google assistant through the remote microphone.

Note that for english channels you should be able to install the freely app in quarter 2 2024, though I suspect it may be geolocked.
